I cannot tell you how much I loved reading this. Thank you again for writing so thoughtfully and eloquently. Also, I am so happy to learn the term "nerdgasm," and am planning on using it today as much as I can! If you like you can steal my favorite term-- "operasexual" 😂

Having a nerdgasm upon finding Eileen Cornett’s comment. We collaborated on a recital of Verlaine songs a long time ago. I relate to this as someone who received substandard music training in piano, was rejected by the University Choir in my undergraduate school because I didn’t know what vocal sight reading was (I could sight read on piano but nobody ever mentioned that as important.)

After trying & failing as an art historian (ha), I inched my way into singing with little or no support & ended up with a doctorate in vocal performance & pedagogy. Twas here that Eileen’s skills were invaluable to me. I got close enough to smell a sort of big time but left it to direct a tiny group of determined people in a church choir & encouraging exactly what you are recommending. It was a happy thing. Some people threw shade (we weren’t perfect & I never asked anyone not to sing) but more people appreciated us & if I do say so, we weren’t half bad.

But I’m not sure this could happen today.

Thanks for expressing this so well.
